CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Nearly 90 additional officers will be on the streets of Charlotte-Mecklenburg this weekend. The added officers are part of sweeping changes laid out by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe, in effort to crack down on crime.Shirley Graves is a business owner in the heart of University City. She's glad to know the largest patrol division in the county is getting more than half a dozen extra officers on the streets. "If someone see the visibility of an officer and they're gonna do something, they're gonna change their minds because of the officer," said Graves. On average, each of the 13 patrol districts is getting six to eight extra officers. The south division is getting the most help with nine added officers, and Central division is receiving the least, but still getting a boost with four more officers."With the extra officers, it can’t hurt. It's certainly going to help us," said Sgt. Chuck Henson, one of the response area commanders in University City. "And I think it will take some of the stress off the other officers that have been here and working so hard."Henson also said the added help will allow them to focus on crime hots pots. "We can still have people answer calls, but we're going to have these specialized units that are gonna target particular crime trends that we've seen," he said.
