Gas Coming To Charlotte As Attendants Try To Smooth Transactions

Tuesday, September 30, 2008 – updated: 6:38 pm EDT September 30, 2008

At Governor Mike Easley's request, two oil companies have agreed to send 20 tanker trucks full of gasoline from Indianapolis to Charlotte.

The additional fuel should boost local supplies. The tankers will remain in North Carolina as long as they're needed to help haul fuel.

The tankers will likely come in handy because the Colonial Pipeline, the major supplier of gas to Charlotte, is now working at the capacity it was before hurricanes Gustav and Ike hit. But even though more gas is flowing to Charlotte, it will still take days for tankers to refill gas stations.

AAA Carolinas said again Tuesday only one in five gas stations in the Charlotte area even have gas to sell, which is making stations with fuel very popular.

Don Brown said Exxon hired his valet service from Greensboro to work at a South Tryon Street station and another one down the street. Over the next few days, his 12 men will be in Charlotte with three valets at each station rotating 12-hour shifts.

Valet Mike Petro said, "Our job is making sure everyone is spread out throughout the service pumps and traffic is flowing and everyone is getting in and out as smoothly as possible."
