CHESTER CO., S.C. -- Deputies in Chester County, S.C., are investigating a fatal hunting accident.

Authorities said a man and his son were hunting in Sumter National Forest at about 7 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators said either the father or son shot at what they thought was a deer, but it turned out to be a person.

Authorities told Eyewitness News newspaper partner, the Herald in Rock Hill that 33-year-old Touna Xiong of York was hunting in the woods when he was shot in the back. They said he was not wearing a blaze-orange vest.

Deputies said the incident is being investigated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Authorities have not said if charges will be filed against the hunter who shot Xiong.

Saturday was the first day hunters could hunt deer with guns.
