Teens Robbed After Gastonia Park Closes For Night

GASTONIA, N.C. -- Police are looking for as many as 10 men they said robbed four teenagers at a park in Gastonia.Dillon Davis comes to Phillips Center to skateboard with friends.“We come out to skate a pretty good bit until we get tired of skating,” he said.Parents bring their small children for the playground. The soccer field, in clear view of both areas, is where four teens said they were surrounded by armed men.“It's scary to know that something like that could happen at a public park where children come,” Davis said.One of the victims told Eyewitness News at bout 9 p.m. Sunday they were about to leave after playing soccer with friends. He said four men approached and one drew a gun and asked for money so casually that they didn't think he was serious.They quickly realized it was real, when six more men walked out of the woods nearby with guns. The victim said they gave the men all the money they had, about $150.He said the largest guy in the group got upset and accused them of with holding money. He starting hitting them. He said another man cocked his gun, pointed it at one of the teens' heads and demanded more money.The victim said when they didn't come up with more the men took their shoes, keys, an iPod and cell phones.The park was officially closed, but police are still concerned.Police spokesperson Donna Lahser said search dogs were called to try and track the suspect with no luck. She said this is the first report of this kind at city parks.“This is the first of this type thing and hopefully the last,” she said.
