Family Feels Justice Served In Deadly Charlotte Crash Following Robbery

Monday, October 13, 2008 – updated: 6:28 pm EDT October 13, 2008

A Charlotte man will go to prison for at least 20 years after a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Police said 19-year-old Terrence Smith was driving a stolen van when he and another juvenile tried to break into an ATM on Sharon Amity Road in 2006. As the two fled, the van struck 53-year-old Norman Barnette's truck, killing him.

Barnette's family was in the courtroom Monday.

"Today, maybe, will put an end to some of our pain and suffering," said Martha Barnette, Norman's sister-in-law.

The judge sentenced Smith to a term of 220 to 273 months in prison for the murder. He faces another 10 to 20 months for the stolen vehicle conviction. The sentences will be served consecutively.

Smith's family left the courthouse before being reached for comment.
