ALBEMARLE, N.C. -- A Stanly County high school teacher turned himself in to police on felony charges of sex crimes against a student Thursday.

West Stanly High School teacher Marko Little, 27, is charged with four counts of indecent liberties with a child and four counts of taking indecent liberties with a student. Investigators won’t say exactly what Little is accused of doing, but according to arrest warrants, Little attempted to take advantage of a student on four occasions earlier this month.

Maj. Terry Blue with the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office said the incidents involved a 15-year-old. Investigators were notified of the accusations by the Stanly County school district last week.

“There was enough evidence, and strong evidence, to justify the arrest warrants we obtained,” said Sheriff Rick Burris.

The sheriff said some of the incidents happened at school and others off campus.

School officials said Little has been suspended without pay and his dismissal has been recommended to the school board. Little, who lives in Albemarle, taught social studies and physical education. His father is the school’s athletic director.

Kathy Harwood said her daughter, a ninth-grader, was in Little’s social studies class.

“It makes me angry, first off, and scared,” she said. “Almost a disappointment because he was a teacher. You expect better. You expect more out of a teacher.”

Little has been released from jail on $10,000 bond. The sheriff said the investigation is closed and no more charges are expected.
