Winthrop Cutting Out Lights, Turning Down Thermostats To Save Money

Posted: 6:12 pm EST November 21, 2008Updated: 7:12 am EST November 22, 2008

It's going to be a little colder in class at Winthrop University come Monday morning.

A massive 15 percent cut in state funding is forcing the college to cut costs any way it can. Students will get an e-mail next week telling them the temperature will be two degrees lower in classrooms. Also, in the morning, the heat will be turned on an hour later.

Teachers will be reminded to shut windows and turn off lights when they leave the room.

Winthrop students said they'd rather endure a chilly morning than another tuition hike.

"I'd rather be bundled up in class than pay $100 more a semester,” one said.

"Desperate times call for desperate measures. I guess cutting corners anywhere you can, can really be helpful,” another said.

By cutting the utility bill, Winthrop expects to save $90,000 by the end of the school year.
