CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is revealing a few details about how it plans to cut $5 million that Mecklenburg County is withholding for budget reasons.School officials said they plan to cut jobs at the central office level by condensing 13 positions into four, which will save the district close to $500,000. But they promise not to lay off anyone inside schools, especially teachers. They also plan to wait to buy certain things, such as school buses.Parents seem relieved, but they don't want to celebrate yet.Sylvia Wood said, "It's hard to understand how that can't impact people. Of course it's going to impact people in the schools. But I don't know, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how."Superintendent Peter Gorman plans to reveal more specifics after he tells school board members.“I’ve got some rough idea where some of it will come from,” he said. “I'm not ready to roll that out yet because I want to make sure I share it with our board first."More cuts could come this year and next. School officials said they may have to slash more than 1,200 positions next year. Those layoffs could include teachers.CMS started the year with a budget around $1.2 billion, so cutting $5 million may not seem like a lot, but Gorman said he can hire 100 teachers with that kind of money.• VIDEO: Gorman Discusses CMS Budget Cuts • RELATED STORY: CMS Ordered To Cut $5 Million
