ROCK HILL, S.C. -- There is mourning across South Carolina as friends remember two people killed in a violent crash in Rock Hill."It's sad. It's just sad," said Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile. On Monday, he told his officers to pray for the family of 40-year-old Stacey Roberts.Roberts was a nine-year veteran of the department who was killed Sunday night."What can you really say," Faile said. "It's just a tragedy."Rock Hill police said Roberts was driving his motorcycle at 80 mph north on Heckle Boulevard when he collided with a Honda driven by 22-year-old Jordan Smith.Witnesses said the impact was so powerful that it flipped the Honda on its side. Rock Hill's accident reconstruction team said Monday that both drivers were at fault because Roberts was speeding, but Smith failed to yield the right of way and pulled out in front of the motorcycle.Flags now fly at half-staff outside the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office. Former Sheriff Johnny Cauthen hired Roberts back in 2000. He could hardly contain his emotions Monday. "Stacey was a jam-up officer, both on duty and off," Cauthen said.Roberts was also a big man, standing over 6-foot-5-inches tall and weighing over 300 pounds."His heart was big, too -- bigger than anything in the world," Cauthen said.Six years ago, Cauthen was there when Roberts was shot in the chest while he was trying to serve a warrant in Heath Springs. The bullet pierced his vest and lodged in his chest. It was never removed."I was with him in the ambulance, and the trip to Charlotte seemed like two days," Cauthen said. "I know you're not supposed to ask why, but how he lived through that gunshot and then this, it's just very tough."Roberts lost his wife about three years ago to a sudden illness. He leaves behind two children. At Winthrop University, the campus is in shock after the death of Smith."He was just an all-around wonderful guy," said friend and advisor Debbie Garrick. She met Smith his freshman year when he was handpicked for the prestigious Emerging Leaders program. It's an honor less than 20 incoming freshman are chosen for.Smith quickly got involved in everything on campus. He was president of his fraternity and a student government leader, and new students often saw his face first because he helped with orientation."You never saw Jordan without an ear-to-ear grin. There's rarely a student on this campus that wasn't touched by him," Garrick said.Monday afternoon, Smith's Facebook page had comment after comment from mourners and friends expressing sympathy to the family of the 22-year-old from Columbia.Smith's girlfriend, Bonita Davis, was a passenger in his car. She is listed in fair condition at Carolinas Medical Center.Rock Hill police are still looking for at least two motorcycle drivers who apparently stopped after the crash and then left before police arrived. Police want to talk to those people and urge them to call in.RELATED STORY: Lancaster County Deputy Killed In Wreck
