CHESTER CO., S.C. -- Several flowers were placed near where a young mother fell more than 50 feet to her death over the weekend. Leila Gaston, 20, died Saturday evening at a spillway in Great Falls, S.C.Neighbors said Gaston was getting a piggyback ride from a friend when they both fell into the rocks and water below. The man who fell was rushed to the hospital. "They were down a 60-70 foot embankment. We actually had to get water stopped before we could actually get to them," said Lisa Allen, a volunteer firefighter with the Great Falls Fire Department. Allen was one of the first on scene.A third friend, who didn't fall, led first responders to where the accident happened. "We had to go around the fence, down the embankment, hold on to some trees and branches. It was actually a treacherous little walk to get where they were," said Allen. On Gaston's MySpace page, the young mother described herself as "sweet" and "kind". She proudly announces her daughter will turn one this summer. Despite all the "No Trespassing" signs and other warnings, nearly everyone we spoke with in Great Falls said people venture down to the spillway. "People come down here and go fishing, or come out to walk the trails. There are always people here," said Daniel Covin, who lives nearby.Covin said it's been more than a decade since the last death there. No word if any additional measures will be added to prevent something like this from happening again.Chester County deputies have not released the name or condition of the man who fell.
