CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mecklenburg County manager Harry Jones revealed his budget recommendations Tuesday night. He told county commissioners they have $100 million less to work with than this fiscal year. He said, "We ain't got enough money to fund services and programs at current or expanded levels."He thinks they should cut services instead of raising taxes. He also feels the county can't afford to give county workers raises or keep paying as much of their health insurance. Dozens of upset deputies filled the meeting to pressure commissioners not to follow that suggestion. Chief deputy Felicia McAdoo told us less "take home" pay for them could shortchange the public. She said, "If you don't have the people, if you don't have the resources, then core services are affected."Commission chairperson Jennifer Roberts told all county employees, "We want you to hang in there in this budget season and we're going to make it through together."Jones also suggests the county give Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools about 10% less than it got this year and give MEDIC, the library, and Carolinas HealthCare System 8% less. You can weigh in on the recommendations at a public hearing one week from Thursday. Commissioners have the final say. They plan to vote next month.
