Swine flu has made its mark across the country and Monday one case of the illness, also known as H1N1, has been confirmed in Mecklenburg County.

The Mecklenburg County Health Department made the announcement at a news conference and confirmed that a child in elementary school has contracted the virus.

The Health Department said the child traveled to New York City for Memorial Day, where he contracted the virus.

The child has been released from hospitalized and is being isolated at home and has had no contact with schools since returning from New York. The child's parents are also being monitored.

That brings the swine flu count up to 22 in North Carolina. In South Carolina there have been 37 confirmed cases.

According to The Center For Disease Control there are almost 9,000 confirmed or probable cases in the U.S.

So far 15 deaths have been caused by swine flu related illnesses.
