CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Eyewitness News is asking more about Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services money that may not have made it to needy families.Eyewitness News went through what auditors found so far. They have dozens of concerns, including what happened to $152,000 for Christmas gifts for foster children and why it looks like DSS spent money on office supplies instead of children's emergency items.Eyewitness News showed the findings to people curious about the audit.West Charlotte resident Michelle Collier said, "It is surprising."DSS is making changes in the meantime. It's turning over a lot of its banking to the county, DSS employees are getting more training, and DSS is using special debit cards instead of vouchers.DSS also suspended two workers. They said one was cleared of any wrongdoing and is back at work. The other is on medical leave. DSS has not released their names.Mecklenburg County commission chair Jennifer Roberts believes this was all more careless than criminal."There's no indication that there was criminal activity,” she said.County commissioners plan to get an update next Tuesday. They requested a review of all county bookkeeping practices.
