FORT MILL, S.C. -- Police in Fort Mill have a warning for drivers this holiday weekend. They said a group of men are tempting travelers with a chance to win big money in a card game, and then robbing them. Police said that's exactly what happened to a couple from Florida who stopped at a truck stop off Interstate 77 on Thursday, and a Fort Mill couple who saw that story on Eyewitness News said the same thing almost happened to them more than a month ago.Police said the Florida couple had pulled into a truck stop on Sutton Road where they saw a group of five men with lots of cash inside the store. The victim, whose name has not been released, went back to his car and was returning with $7,200 in cash when the group grabbed him and took the money. They left in a blue Ford Crown Victoria with Ohio plates and a white work van. Those are the same kind of vehicles that Tosha and Michael Broderick told Eyewitness News they saw when a group of men tried to pull a similar scam on them. The Brodericks said they were on their way to Virginia on Memorial Day weekend when they pulled into a rest stop north of Statesville with car trouble. That's when Michael Broderick said a man approached him with an exciting invitation."He said, ‘Hey, this guy's over here giving out money. He just hit the lottery last night,’" Broderick told Eyewitness News.He said the men then tried to get him to play a card game known as "Three Card Monty," but a trucker warned him first.“The guy came out of the Hendrick truck talking about it being a scam. (He said,) ‘They're going to jump you and take your money.’"Broderick did not lose any money, and after hearing about the robbery in Fort Mill he called police there to report his case.Fort Mill police said they believe the group is operating on interstates in the Southeast, and they're warning travelers not to fall for the offer.
