CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue wants to raise the sales tax by a penny, and she may levy taxes on some services you've never paid taxes on before, like car repairs and going out with friends.Ann Hicks is the general manager at Northcross Lanes at the Lake. She's already got 250 signatures on a petition to stop a tax on bowling.Perdue has a list of new items to add the sales tax to and taxes to increase that she says will give the state the $1.6 billion it needs. But Hicks said a recreation and entertainment tax would not only hurt her business, but families.Republican Rep. Ric Killian agrees and said, "These taxes are regressive and take hard-earned dollars from families when they can least afford further sacrifice.""Reducing spending, not raising taxes, is the solution to this fiscal crisis," he said.At Joey's Truck Repair in north Charlotte, Joey Aycock finds he's at the end of a double-edged sword. He said his oldest son is a school teacher in Mecklenburg County, and the governor says the new taxes, for things like services and repairs, are needed to keep teachers in schools.Perdue said, “Operating without a budget leaves local governments, school districts, service providers and families across North Carolina in limbo regarding what resources and services will be available to them. Put simply, it means schools that don’t know if they will have the teachers to fill their classrooms. This is about the future of our state. The time to pass a budget is now.”But Aycock said that right now auto parts are already taxed and labor is not. He said that with business so slow, he can ill afford to lose any more customers. “They won't get repairs done because they don't have the money with double taxation if you will," he said. The services of accountants and attorneys won't be taxed, however. The governor's plan is to lower sales tax overall to 6.5 percent for 2010.• PDF: Perdue New Taxes
