Traffic Light Coming To Dangerous Indian Trail Intersection

Residents of Indian Trail near Lake Park said the intersection of Unionville-Indian Trail and Faith Church roads is one of the most dangerous around. They said it’s in desperate need of a traffic light.

“Cars keep coming. I’ll never get out of here,” said driver Nancy Camden.

It's the lack of sight lines that's had local leaders begging the state for a traffic light and turn lanes.

“It's just a matter of time before there's a serious accident or someone gets killed,” said Lake Park Mayor Kendall Spence.

For three months, with federal stimulus money in hand, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has been trying to get a light put in, but it hasn't happened. That’s because in order to build the project, the state needs to buy a small strip of land, and so far the owner has been unable to close the deal.

Indian Trail Mayor John Quinn said he is frustrated. He said if the deal isn't done by next week, there won't be enough time to build the project before winter stops the paving season.

“Now, because of the problem with the land, we don't know that it's going to be able to get done,” he said.

The land is owned by a day care center, so Eyewitness News went there to get an explanation. The owner wasn't there, but two hours later workers showed Eyewitness News a land contract that's now been signed and notarized.

“As far as we're concerned, all the paperwork's been done and we're just waiting on the DOT to pick up the signed paperwork,” said day care manager Jeannie Noble.

It should be the last obstacle to a traffic light that can't come soon enough. State records show there have been dozens of crashes at the intersection in the last few years.

The NCDOT said it will take about six weeks to start construction, but the light should be up and operating by fall.
