High-Speed Chase Involving Rental Car Ends On I-485

Posted: 5:26 am EDT August 4, 2009Updated: 4:13 pm EDT August 4, 2009

Police said a woman led them on a high-speed chase in a rental car late Monday night on two local interstates.

Police said they first tried to stop the car driven by 57-year-old Carmelita Cook at about 11 p.m. when an officer spotted it sitting in the wrong lane on George Lyles Boulevard near Interstate 85. The officer said the driver appeared disoriented and acted strangely so he called for backup. He said when he tried to get the woman’s ID, the woman pulled off and headed onto the interstate.

The officer said he believed the woman was a danger to herself and others so he gave chase. Police tried to use stop sticks at the Concord Mills exit ramp, but they said Cook missed them.

Police said the officer and a state trooper chased the woman as she got onto Interstate 485. They said her car reached speeds of up to 90 mph.

Troopers again tried to use stop sticks near Exit 36 but were unsuccessful. Police said Cook continued southbound on I-485, and troopers took over the search from Concord police.

Authorities said Mint Hill police and troopers were finally able to stop the car with stop sticks at Exit 43, near Lawyers Road, about 30 minutes after the chase began.

Troopers took Cook into custody. She was evaluated at a local hospital and then placed in the Cabarrus County Jail under a $10,000 bond. Concord police charged her with felony speeding to elude authorities, impaired driving, resisting, obstructing and delaying a government official, driving without an operator's license and carrying a concealed weapon.

The rental car she was driving was impounded and will be returned to the rental company.
