CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A mother is facing assault and battery and trespassing charges after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said she attacked a school bus driver in northeast Charlotte.Police said the attack happened on Vermilion Drive on Thursday. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials the 57-year-old bus driver has been suspended with pay while the district investigates, which is standard procedure.Police said Shani Edmund is the woman accused in the attack. School leaders said Edmund requested a new bus stop for her daughter and was assigned a temporary stop. A school spokeswoman said Edmund did not like the temporary fix because she felt it was too far for her daughter to walk.Edmund is accused of taking out her frustrations on the unsuspecting bus driver while a bus load of elementary school students looked on.Witnesses described a dramatic and violent attack by Edmund on the bus driver. Kim Silvia was parked behind the bus at the time."(Edumund) got off the bus, then got back on the bus after she took off her hair, her shoes and her jewelry and threw them on the ground to physically attack the bus driver," Silvia said.Another witness, who captured the final moments of the attack on his cell phone video camera, said, "The children saw the action going on, and they immediately dispersed from the bus. Some (were) jumping from the back of the bus, trying to get out the emergency exit."The video shows a third woman who came to the scene and eventually was able to pull Edmund away from the bus. Witnesses said Edmund’s disapproval of her daughter's bus stop was no excuse for her to attack the bus driver."You don’t go violently attack a . . . woman that's following the rules of her company," Silvia said. When Eyewitness News went by Edmund's home to talk to her about the violent accusations, Edmund said," I don't know what you are talking about."CMS officials said that only people authorized by the district are allowed to set foot on school buses. If parents have a complaint about a bus driver, route or bus stop, they are asked to call the school district's transportation office at 980-343-6715.
