Teen Charged In Pair Of Boone-Area Robberies

A Tennessee teen is accused of robbing two stores in the Boone area before leading police on a chase that ended in a crash Monday afternoon.

Matthew Tester, 19, of Mountain City, Tenn., is charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault by pointing a gun, fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, failure to heed blue lights and siren, aggressive driving, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving left of center, driving with no operator's license, speeding, failure to stop for a stop light and resisting a public officer.

Boone police said while one robbery in Boone is rare, two in the area is almost unheard of. But they said Tester went on a crime spree Monday because he was intoxicated.

Boone police said they believe Tester first robbed the B & B Mini Mart in Vilas with a rifle. They said 20 minutes later, just before 5 p.m., he held up the Kangaroo Express on Blowing Rock Road in Boone.

Witnesses at the second convenience store were able to give officers a good description of Tester’s gold-colored car. Deputies tried to stop the vehicle on Wilson Ridge Road, but they said the driver refused to stop.

Watauga County deputies and Boone police pursued the vehicle until it crashed on Charlie Hollar Road.

Investigators said Tester jumped out with his weapon and ran.

Officers set up a perimeter on Bamboo Road near the New River and were able to take Tester into custody after a short struggle.

Tester was taken to the Watauga Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries before he was arrested.

As he was walked into the Watauga County Jail, he told Eyewitness News he was sorry for the robberies and that he committed them because he was hearing voices.

G.B. Gosai, who has owned the B&B Mini Mart for 20 years, said the store had never been robbed before. He said he doesn’t accept the teen’s apology.

“We work 16 to17 hours on our feet every day to try to make a living. For someone to come in and try to take the money, it’s not right,” he said.

Tester is being held on $100,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 5.
