Church Moves In To Eastland Mall

Eastland Mall has a new tenant, and it’s one many probably wouldn't expect.

Renovatus Church is part of Church of God. It's leasing the old movie theater in Eastland Mall.

The church begins services Sunday at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Do you think a church is a good addition to Eastland Mall?

Pastor Jonathan Martin said Renovatus is Latin for "renovation." He said the church is for "liars, dreamers and misfits"-- people rebuilding their lives, people looking for second chances -- just like Eastland Mall.

"The idea that this property has sort of been forgotten and pushed to the margin -- we've always identified ourselves as a church for people from the margins. So for us, it's a perfect fit," Martin said.

Eyewitness News recently found out that city leaders have been discussing Eastland's future in closed sessions, even thinking of spending $40 to $50 million in tax money to buy it. They said they're not willing to discuss how the church's move affects their plans or whether it changes their vision, at least not publicly.

Still, when asked if the church is the kind of organization she'd like to see in Eastland permanently, city council member Nancy Carter, who represents the east side, said, "Yes, I would. Yes, I would. There's a space there for institutions – learning, library, faith."

People living near the mall said they’re glad someone is investing in Eastland, even though a church is not your typical mall tenant.

"It's good. It's pretty good. It's a good idea," said James Smallwood.
