Posted: 4:05 pm EST November 4, 2009Updated: 10:18 pm EST November 4, 2009

Two people were killed in a south Charlotte crash Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened near the intersection of Pineville-Matthews Road and Johnston Road shortly before 4 p.m.

Police said Ralph Herrick, 71, crossed the center line along Pineville-Matthews road and hit an oncoming car. Herrick died in the crash.

The driver of the other car, Henry Holliday, 48, was also killed. Police said a young person in Holliday's car was hurt, but not seriously.

"It was an eternal moment for a couple of people definitely. I just thank God for life, and it just gives you a real appreciation of your safety," said passer-by Donna Squires.

Police are still investigating why Herrick swerved into oncoming traffic.
