HICKORY, N.C. -- For the first time, family members of a hit-and-run victim got a chance to see the teenager accused of driving drunk along Highway 321 and killing their loved one last month.Daniel Whisnant,18, wouldn’t answer any questions for Eyewitness News as he left court in Hickory on Thursday.Investigators said he hit and killed Charlie Sybrant, an Appalachian State University student, and never stopped. Joshua Gajus, who is still in a wheelchair from the accident, was walking with Sybrant at the time after the pair ran out of gas."(I want to ) let him know he can't get away with things like this. It’s not a situation you can push away and be over with,” Gajus said.Whisnant was stopped nearly 15 miles away, driving in Valdese after the crash. Police have dash cam video of the stop, and prosecutors said the teen's blood alcohol tested at a .12 -- well above the legal limit of .08.Dee Sybrant said her daughter was getting her master's in criminal justice after graduating with honors on Mother's Day."Charlie wanted to be the director of her own halfway house for juveniles. She wanted to help the people who were in trouble," she said. She said she wants to thank the people who stopped the night her daughter was killed while she is now seeking justice against the teenager accused of ending her life."Forgiveness is something he'll have to ask for and earn. For it to be given right now, it’s not a question I can whole-heartedly answer," Sybrant said.Whisnant’s case was moved to Superior Court after his attorney waived a probable cause hearing. He’s being held under $104,000 bond. The judge added that if he did make bond, he could not operate a motor vehicle.Charlie Sybrant's family will be traveling to Boone on Friday night where they'll be holding a Memorial Walk with classmates starting at the Daughton Dorm at 6 p.m.
