CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Billy Graham Library just celebrated the 91st birthday of the internationally-known Christian evangelist. However, the west Charlotte attraction will close for renovations before it even reaches its third birthday.

The facility is in need of some technical upgrades after tour groups complained about the sound in some of the exhibits.

Dave Marcus came down from Waynesville on Monday to see the library for the first time.

"I didn't realize it was so beautiful. It's a beautiful place," Marcus said.

However, once inside, he noticed that while you're standing at one exhibit, you can sometimes hear the next one.

"The first theater we went into, when we went to the second one I could hear the first one when they started another round," he said.

Library officials told Eyewitness News they didn't notice the problem at first when the complex opened in June 2007. However, it became clear when large crowds were touring the building that changes needed to be made.

Now there's a fund set aside to do that. Money from the Billy Graham Library Endowment Fund will pay for the library's original designer, ITEC Entertainment, to return and do the work.

The company will upgrade the exhibits to provide better sound, as well as add more video elements and even more of Graham's personal items for visitors to see.

The work is expected to close the library from early January until April 1, but the grounds around it will remain open to the public, as well as Graham's childhood home on the property.

Eyewitness News asked officials how much the renovations will cost. Private donors have already footed the bill for the $27 million complex near Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Officials said they're awaiting an estimate from the contractor on the cost.

Claudia Ferguson spent Monday enjoying a place she considers inspiring.

"To see all the pictures of Billy and all these many, many years he's been in the ministry and what he's done for the world," she said.

Ferguson said it'll be sad to see the place shut down for several months, but she understands the need to improve the experience for visitors.

"I guess they'll have to close it if they're going renovate it, but there will be a lot of people that miss it," she said.

There's no doubt there. Officials said the Billy Graham Library has drawn 330,000 visitors since its 2007 opening. It's free of charge and provides a highly-detailed look at the life and impact Graham has made on the world.
