CHARLOTTE, NC -- Airports around the country are working to catch up on flights after a Federal Aviation Administration computer system failed early Thursday. The FAA said the computer system began working again shortly after 10 a.m.At Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, more than 50 flights waited to take off at the peak of the delays. Flights were delayed an average of 30 minutes.A representative with US Airways told Eyewitness News that the computer problem came during the peak of the airline's morning travel rush. Extra personnel were called in to assist at the airline's command center. No extra staff was needed at Charlotte-Douglas. A Charlotte-Douglas representative said the airport’s flight plans were being faxed to an FAA office in Salt Lake City. The computer glitch affected every airline. Both airport and airline officials stress that the glitch caused no safety concerns. The air traffic controllers union said the computer failure involved both of the FAA’s computer centers in Salt Lake City and Atlanta. Even though the FAA said the problem had been solved, Doug Church, a spokesman for the National Air Traffic Controllers Union, said controllers were still entering flight plans manually into computers in some locations. At some airports, it will take two to three hours to get flights back on schedule. The system, called the National Airspace Data Interchange Network, appears to be the same system that failed in August 2008.You can check flight delays by clicking here.• IMAGES: Planes Delayed at Charlotte-Douglas
