Mount Holly Couple Held at Gunpoint During Robbery

Mount Holly police are looking for two men who kicked in the front door of a home and held its occupants at gunpoint early Thursday morning. The victims were terrified at the beginning of the four-hour ordeal, but at the end of it, they fed the robbers and hugged them goodbye.

The men broke into the Tuckaseegee Road home just after midnight.

Both men had handguns, but no one was hurt. One victim, who does not want to be identified, said she and her husband could see police lights outside the window as they were held up.

However, the police were unaware of the situation inside the house. The officers were watching as a tow-truck operator towed a car from the street. It may have been the home invaders’ vehicle.

“The police was right out there towing a car and we were in here at gunpoint,” the victim said.

The men took jewelry and $165, and then threatened to kill the couple.

“I said, ‘Just give us our lives. Don’t hurt us,’” she said.

The victim said she feared the worst and began praying.

“I said, ‘God, please, in the name of Jesus, touch their hearts,’” she said. “When he told me to shut up, I wasn’t going to shut up praying.”

It seems that her prayer touched at least one of the men. He gave back her money and all but two of her rings.

“He said, ‘That prayer done something to me. I have to give you your stuff back,’” she said.

She said both men apologized before leaving. The victims promised not to go to the police, but decided they needed to because they were afraid the robbers would return.

Capt. Jim Benfield said this break-in is disturbing because it seems that the robbers randomly chose a house. He said the towed car might help identify the men.

“We are checking on a lead that the vehicle towed may be the suspects’ vehicle,” Benfield said.

Officers are looking for two black men in their early 20s. One is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall. The other man is around 6 feet tall and has short hair.

If you have any information, call the Mount Holly police at 704-827-4343.
