Surveillance Video Holds Clues To Brazen Charlotte Burglaries

Posted: 10:14 pm EST November 19, 2009Updated: 10:58 pm EST November 19, 2009

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police could have a huge break in solving several home burglaries in the McClintock Woods and East Forest area.

A neighbor, Mark Barringer, caught one of the crimes on his home surveillance camera.

The video shows a dark-colored van drive slowly up Old Post Road then pull into a driveway at a home in the 6900 block.

On the video, a man gets out of the driver's side of the van and goes up to the home. Moments later, the man returns to the van and a second man gets out of the passenger's side. Both men go up to the home and minutes later haul out a flat-screen television. The suspects put the television in the back seat of the van and then drive off.

“The whole thing's done in less than eight minutes,” said Barringer, who is also the neighborhood watch leader.

Police think the same suspects may be responsible for several other burglaries in the area on Wednesday as well.

It's something Barringer said he and his neighbors have worked hard to prevent. He said after a spike in burglaries about six years ago, they organized a neighborhood watch and created a neighborhood website to notify resident of nearby crime.

Barringer said it worked to reduce crime. But after Wednesday's bold break-ins, he is gearing up his neighbors to fight back again.

"Whether it be the economy, whether we let our guard down, crime has returned to our streets and we need to be a little more vigilant about it and see if we can't get rid of it,” Barringer said.

If you have any information on the burglaries, call police.
