BELMONT, N.C. -- Neighbors in the city of Belmont came together Sunday night for a community Thanksgiving service at East Belmont Baptist Church. Close in their thoughts was the Rev. Ronnie Wilson, who was killed Saturday in a crash on Highway 903 in Lancaster Co., S.C.Belmont Mayor Richard Boyce was one of dozens of people who attended the service."All of us were tremendously shocked. Here's a pastor who has lived in our community and served our community for 10 years,” he said.South Carolina state troopers said Wilson and four other men from the South Point Free-Will Baptist Church were driving a church van home from a men’s golf retreat in Myrtle Beach when they crashed head on with a pickup truck. The church van was severely damaged and burned. Rev. Wilson died at the scene.Sunday morning service at his church was canceled. Instead, members met there to pray and comfort one another. Mayor Boyce said everyone in the city should lend their prayers and support to Wilson’s family and congregation during this difficult time."I hope they’ll be strengthened and encouraged by our love and support," Boyce said.The Rev. Kenneth Alexander was also at Sunday’s community service. He said he knew Wilson and said he hopes that other people who knew and loved him will also find comfort by the life he lived."I was telling my congregation this morning as I prayed for the church and the family, many times we don’t know when God is going to call us from labor to reward but we believe truly Rev. Wilson is getting his reward at this time,” he said. Troopers said Rev. Wilson swerved to avoid a tire that flew off a truck pulling a trailer, when he crashed head-on with the pickup truck.In all, five people were in the church van. Four other men were taken to Carolinas Medical Center. Troopers said two people in the pickup truck were thrown from the truck and airlifted to the hospital. Troopers said the people in the pickup truck were not wearing seat belts.VIDEO: Pastor Killed In Wreck
