MOUNT AIRY, N.C. -- Mount Airy's board of education has fired the local high school's boys basketball coach after he was charged with having sexual relationships with two students.
The board voted unanimously on Thursday to dismiss Kemp Phillips. The board cited immorality, insubordination, neglect of duty and failure to fulfill the duties and responsibilities imposed upon teachers.
The board will notify the state superintendent of public instruction of the action.
Police arrested Phillips and two other teachers who served as coaches after a police investigation uncovered allegations of sexual intercourse inside a gym office. Authorities say on at least one occasion, the teachers were engaged in a game of strip poker with students.
Phillips is charged with three counts of statutory rape; four counts of taking indecent liberties with a student; two counts of sex offense with a student; and one count of taking indecent liberties with a child under 16.
