ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The AAA Carolinas headquarters in Charlotte is getting phone calls from drivers concerned about the Toyota recall.A AAA spokesman said people should not panic, and drivers should keep in mind that the car dealer is addressing the safety of all potential vehicles, but still only a fraction are at risk."The odds are probably very good that it won't happen to you, and it's not going to be like these things are all going to fail at once," said AAA spokesman Tom Crosby. The new recall is separate from an earlier Toyota recall involving gas pedals being stuck in floor mats.Car dealers and Toyota drivers told Eyewitness News they’re upset by the safety issues.“I was disappointed because Toyota has always been, (had a) stellar reputation, and mine has been so reliable. No problems whatsoever," said driver Jane Gorman.Toyota-certified technician Mark Enos said he’s never seen anything like this recall and he’s worked exclusively on the brand since the mid-‘80s.He says customers are calling him with concerns, and he thinks the impact will be severe."I think it's really sad, and it's going to have a dramatic effect on the customers and on Toyota Motor Corporation,” Enos said. Toyota said the recall effects 2.3 million vehicles, but right now there is no fix and notices have not yet gone out to car owners.Customers said the carmaker's image should remain strong because they're taking such dramatic action and that sends a positive message. At this point, if you're under the recall, don't take your car to the dealer. They can't fix it until engineers get to the root of the problem.
