ROCK HILL, S.C. -- A routine traffic stop helped Rock Hill police put an end to dozens of car break-ins that had stumped them for nearly two months.Police said they think they can link 22-year-old Anthony Lago to more than 30 car break-ins since January. York County sheriff's deputies stopped Lago earlier this week for a simple traffic violation and found some of the stolen items in his car.“They were after GPS systems, iPods, cell phones -- anything left out in plain sight," police spokesman Brad Redfearn said.Police said the people Lago targeted either left their car doors unlocked or left valuables inside their cars.Ashley Blackwell was one of the victims, and said she wishes she'd carried her iPod and cash inside her apartment with her last month, instead of leaving them in her car.“I’m busy and I just didn't think to grab it as I came in the door," she said.A friend came to her door later to tell her that the dome light was on in her car and the door was standing open. When she checked, her iPod and $50 were gone.“It was just unnerving knowing someone had been in my car. [It was] kind of scary," she said.Blackwell is one of as many as 30 victims police have identified. Police said Lago struck all over town: churches, the Manchester shopping area, the Galleria mall, Piedmont Medical Center, York Tech and several apartment complexes. Some people left their doors unlocked, but others found the windows of their locked cars smashed to pieces.Police said they think Lago had help. They have active warrants out for 28-year-old Shawn Smith and 20-year-old Brittany Leeson. Both also face breaking and entering charges, which carry up to five years in prison per count.Police said they are working to return lost property to victims whenever possible. The case is still under investigation. Police said there could be more victims.
