Police Take 5 Into Custody After Road Rage Incident

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating an apparent road rage incident that led to a shooting in south Charlotte Sunday.

One teenager suffered minor injuries.

According to police, an argument occurred at Camden Pinehurst Apartments between a group of people. Police said one group left the apartment complex and the victim followed. Police said the victim confronted the individuals on Fairview Road and then a gun was drawn.

Police said a shot was fired from the Explorer and the 17-year-old was injured. The victim drove himself back to the Camden Pinehurst Apartments, police said.

Investigators told Eyewitness News that a witness saw the incident occur and followed the SUV while on the phone with police. She led the officers to Willowbrae Road, where officers took five people into custody for questioning.

"According to the victim, there was a road rage incident where he actually got out of the car because he saw the driver of the other vehicle with a gun. He confronted that individual and a round was dispersed from that one car and he received injuries from that," said Sgt. W.R. Cooke.

Investigators said they recovered a gun from inside the SUV.

The victim was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Cooke said the incident was senseless.

"That gun didn't need to be drawn. And certainly the victim didn't need to get out and confront the suspect who had a gun in his possession. That's not a smart thing to do," he said.

No charges have been filed.
