Iredell County Man Charged With Abducting Child He Met Online

Iredell County deputies arrested William David Williams, 38, Sunday morning on child abduction charges.

Deputies said Williams drove to Georgia to pick up a 16-year-old girl he met on MySpace. Officers said he brought her to his home on Panther Hill Lane last week and would not let her leave.

Deputies said the teenager agreed to meet Williams. But according to detectives, when she said she wanted to go back home, Williams told her she couldn’t.

It wasn't until about a week later that the girl was able to send her aunt a text message telling her she was trapped, police said. Her aunt then called the Iredell Sheriff's Office.

The teenage girl's family had reported her as a runaway.

Detectives said Williams would not let the girl out of his sight.

Authorities won't say whether she was sexually assaulted. They did say that the suspect has a long criminal history, but has never been charged with a sex crime.

On Sunday, deputies seized computers from Williams' home.

"I don't know what to think really. I mean, there [are] a lot of crazy people out here," Harold Faust, who lives in the area, said.

The sheriff's office said this incident should be a warning to parents about the dangers of teens talking to strangers online.
