CHARLOTTE -- Two more students at the Northwest School of the Arts will receive post-exposure rabies vaccinations as a result of coming in contact with bats on campus. This raises the total number of students getting the vaccinations to four.
Northwest School of the Arts, however, is maintaining a regular class schedule for students. More interviews are being conducted to determine if other students may have come in contact with the bats. Students have been required to fill out a survey with detailed questions and CMS has sent letters home to parents.
School officials said that they first noticed the problem early last week when bats were discovered in the ceiling of the school where they had entered through a crack. Officials didn't notify the health department until late Friday afternoon.
CMS Pest Control Department contracted an outside company to assist in removing the bats and worked all weekend to eliminate any remaining bats on the school property.
But the scheduled Monday night inspection revealed one live bat and one dead bat since the extermination.
Northwest School of the Arts Administration and the school district are working closely with the Health Department regarding necessary follow-up.
A small percentage of bats carry the rabies virus. This virus can be transmitted to humans if they are bitten or scratched by the animal, or if the animal's saliva has direct contact with an open skin wound.
