CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- New York and Washington begin the workweek under a new terror warning. The federal government says al-Qaida may be plotting attacks against financial institutions in New York, New Jersey and the nation's capital.
Officials cite intelligence pointing to a car or truck bomb. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, along with several other cities, took part in a conference call with Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge over the weekend, even though Charlotte wasn't mentioned in the threat.Police say they've talked with leaders of local financial institutions about the threat.Mayor Pat McCrory has been getting updates as well.
"Right now, the major alert is in those areas ... our financial institutions," McCrory said.Police say they will focus more attention on the financial centers during their regular patrols. There have been no threats received that are specific to Charlotte or the surrounding area. The threat level in Charlotte remains the same. However, with the news that financial institutions in other parts of the nation may be terrorist targets, the CMPD will continue work with the members of our financial community to ensure security is at its best.
