Whistleblower 9: Former Employees Of Gym, Still No Compensation
On Jan. 17, Whistleblower 9 reported about a Hickory business owned by a big name in professional wrestling. Ric Flair's Gold's Gym closed just before Christmas, putting several people out of work. Some employees didn't get paid and some who did, got paychecks that bounced. Now nearly a month later, former employees, like Lewis White, say they're still hurting for money."Financially, it's put me in a bind," he said. The people who worked at the gym waited day after day for checks to arrive in the mail. That didn't happen. What they did get were W-2s. White said that created an all-new problem."They have money withholding, taxes withheld that are not correct. They have money we did not receive and tax on that money," said White."I'm sorry they've been through what they've been through," said Ric Flair's attorney Richard Fennel.Fennel said he's finally getting a handle on mountains of records from the gym. He said the business simply didn't have the money to pay workers, but that Flair is now stepping up to pay for checks that bounced."We sent out checks to cover payroll checks returned for NSF, that we know about," said Fennel. On Flair's behalf, Fennel offers his apologies. But he said legally, Flair is not to blame."I don't expect anybody to say 'Thank you' to Ric. But, I would like them to understand this money has come out of his pocket -- even thought there's no statute the president of a defunct company is supposed to make good on payroll. Ric did this because he thought it was the right thing," said Fennel.Former employees, like White, only want one thing. They said this battle with Ric Flair isn't over until they get checks in their hands and those checks clear the bank."Pay the people what they're owed and we'll leave him alone," he said.A spokesperson for the IRS said it couldn't comment on this company or what's happened with its employees. She did say in this situation, the workers could file tax returns with the W-2 forms they have, even though they may be technically wrong. The people who worked at the gym said they hope this is the beginning of the end of a real financial mess.
