LANCASTER, S.C. -- The Lancaster County Sheriff is apologizing Tuesday morning for the death of an inmate who attacked four officers last week.
An investigation reveals Maury Cunningham died after being tazered and pepper-sprayed.
Sheriff Johnny Cauthen says Cunningham was armed with two pencils, and stabbed one officer through her face and another over his eye.
The incident happened at the Lancaster Detention Center.
Cauthen revealed the details of the investigation at a news conference on Monday.
Cauthen says he's tried to talk to Cunningham's family about the incident, but they refuse to meet with him.
Cunningham was being held at the detention center on charges including assault and battery with intent to kill.
