CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The children of relocated hurricane evacuees registered to begin attending Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools.About 30 students were registered at the Charlotte Coliseum and 10 were registered at Salvation Army site on Clanton Road. Some early evacuees even registered last week. One of the many children left with haunting memories of Hurricane Katrina is 7-year-old Armani Victor."I saw a lot of water all the way to the roof," she said. That's why Armani -- one of the dozens of kids staying with family in the coliseum -- said she's anxious to get back to school."Because I like to learn and I like math," said Armani. While good Samaritans like Glenda Irwin of Fort Mill dropped off books and games to keep the kids occupied, CMS was on site to register students. Some students had their documents and medical records, but others did not. School officials said no child will be turned away. The kids will be assigned to a school based on where they will be living. One family fled their home near New Orleans and is staying with relatives in Charlotte."It's hard because I miss all my friends and I can't talk to them. So I'm really worried about them," said 15-year-old Erica VanVleet..VanVleet will soon be making new friends. CMS enrolled her at Olympic high school and her mother, Patricia VanVleet, is grateful."Oh, yeah, because I was afraid she'd be missing all this school and that's not good for her. She'd have to go all summer and she don't want to do that," she said.As the American Red Cross looks to find families apartments and other housing, families will learn where the students will be placed. Many staying at Salvation Army -- depending on age -- would be attending Myers Park High, Sedgefield Middle or three nearby elementary schools.Goodwill is asking you to bring specific donations to the coliseum. The evacuees need new socks, new underwear and bras, diapers and unopened cases of bottled water. If you have any of those items, please take them straight to the coliseum.
