HUNTERVILLE, N.C. -- Parents and students can expect extra security in place at North Mecklenburg High School beginning Friday morning.

The additional precautions come after two separate fights broke out on campus after 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

School officials said that prior to Thursday's fight, North Meckenburg had only one armed resource officer and five campus security associates to manage nearly 3,000 students that attend the school on a regular day.

One school board member, Larry Gauvreau, told Eyewitness News that he believes overcrowding leads to discipline problems.

Police were called to North Mecklenburg High School to break up student fights Thursday morning.

Officials said two separate fights broke out after 10 a.m.

Police were called in because the situation got out of control.

Officers shot 2 students, a boy and a girl, with a Taser gun. Those students were sent to the hospital along with five others who officials said have minor injuries.

Officers say they used the Tasers because they felt their lives were in jeopardy because a crowd of students was pushing them.

Authorities tell Eyewitness News that 10 students were arrested. All face misdemeanor charges ranging from inciting a riot to disorderly conduct.

The school dismissed early on Thursday and buses were brought in to take students home.

Officers from Charlotte, Cornelius and the Highway Patrol were called in to help with the situation.

School officials made arrangements for more security to be on campus Friday morning.
