CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Alcohol Beverage Control agents have set up a new hot line the public can call to alert agents to a party where teens may be drinking. They said it's a new way to fight back against the problem of teenagers drinking too much at parties and then getting behind the wheel and causing deadly crashes.Local alcohol agents promise that when someone calls their 24-Hour Teen Drinking Hotline, their pagers go off and they'll raid the parties."Are you going to be more aggressive and charge some of the kids at these parties?" asked reporter Jim Bradley."Absolutely -- Mecklenburg County Alcohol Law Enforcement will hold you accountable for possessing and drinking alcohol if you're underage," said ABC Law Enforcement Capt. Mike Crowley. With so many recent deaths blamed on teen drunken drivers, Charlotte parent Anne Collinson believes many are ready to make the call."If a neighbor of some kids having a party where the parents are out of town, I think they definitely would. I know I would," she said. The district attorney's office said it's intent on prosecuting teens, parents or anyone else who helps children get alcohol.Teenager Briana Randle said that's what it may take to make a difference."If they start seeing their friends being arrested or themselves arrested, then that will bring a real shock to reality," she said.Teenager Rebecca Garret said she doubts everyone will get the message."Some people would say, 'Lets not drink,' but some people would try to make it more secretive so the police wouldn't find out," she said. That's exactly why ABC agents hope the hotline can work. It'll be anonymous and can help them find out where those secret locations might be.Prosecutors said they support the idea, too, and believe it'll make a big difference if people get serious about calling the hot line. The phone number for the 24-Hour Teen Drinking Hotline is (704) 731-5830. The caller can remain anonymous. It lets agents know where a party with underage drinkers is and they will check it out.
