CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Eyewitness News is making sure families in need have everything to help their children get ready for going back to school. A big collection for the 19th annual 9 School Tools supply drive is scheduled this weekend.
It's a full house for Kenyata Hokett, a single mother raising five kids.
From her first-grader to her eighth-grader, they all attend Druid Hills Academy, which is already back in session.
She's expected to provide everything on long school supply list, times five.
“They need composition notebooks, binders, glue sticks, Kleenex, hand sanitizer,” Hokett said. “But it is a struggle, and it does get expensive.”
She makes sure they're focused on their schoolwork, and it shows.
“They're A-B honor roll students. They're very respectful. They're pretty great kids,” Hokett said.
The children, who were working on homework during a Channel 9 interview, didn't know a surprise was coming.
Travis Rivens of Communities in Schools was there with items from their back-to-school lists. The children were excited to dig through their new backpacks.
