A group called "The College Republicans" set up shop selling bricks on the UNC Charlotte campus Monday to protest illegal immigration.

They said the bricks symbolize a wall they would like to see put up to secure our borders and keep illegal immigrants out of the United States.

"Hopefully our senators and our congressmen will see this. You may know about the Berlin wall. Hello? That's what we need on the border, we need a wall," said one UNCC student.

The students said they're not against one specific group of people and America was built on a nation of immigrants, but members said people who move to this country should do it legally, and lawmakers should make sure that happens.

"You need to do your job and enforce the boarders," said student Erin Karriker.

Karriker is chairman of the College Republicans and said America is a country based on lawful principles and only those abiding by the law belong.

"It's a slap in the face and disrespects all those people that want to obey the law and want to provide for themselves legally. To grant blanket amnesty and rights to citizenship that frankly are not deserved," he said.

While the focus was on the brick selling, some students saw things a different way.

"They want to close the borders and they want to bring up the issue that it's illegal, but to me, it just sounds like it's more racist than anything," said another UNC Charlotte student.

The bricks will be sent to Senators Bill Frist, Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr. Individuals may also choose to send bricks to Senators Edward Kennedy and John McCain, sponsors of an immigration reform bill the group said would grant the rights reserved for citizens to illegal immigrants.

Organizers said the bricks symbolically encourage legislators to secure the United States border.
