Rock Hill woman pleads guilty to helping IRS impostors in scam

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Rock Hill woman pleaded guilty in court Tuesday to helping Internal Revenue Service impostors in India trick people out of tens of thousands of dollars.

E'Shellah Calhoun walked out of a Columbia courthouse with clothing over her head and refused to answer questions.

PAST COVERAGE:

Calhoun pleaded guilty to conspiracy and said she went to India several times to teach English. She said scammers approached her and asked her to open a bank account in the United States.

Calhoun told the judge she retrieved roughly $50,000 of victims’ money from that account.

She said she kept some, moved some to other bank accounts and wired some back to India.

Calhoun's lawyer said she kept doing it against her better judgment, but prosecutors said she continued even after she knew federal agents were investigating.

The judge set sentencing for May. Calhoun faces up to five years in prison and may have to pay back victims.
