Woman strikes out with Groupon twice in a row

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte woman continued to buy Groupon deals for hair salons that were out of business or no longer accepting Groupon.

Courtney Gorham and her mother were making plans to attend holiday parties at the end of last year.

"We wanted to look nice and pretty together," Gorham said.

Gorham bought a Groupon for That Finishing Touch Salon to get hair extensions, but the store went out of business.

"(I) contact Groupon. They say, 'OK, we'll just refund it back to your Groupon account so you can purchase a different Groupon.'

Sure, OK, no problem," Gorham said.

They picked a different salon: God Head Studios.

"(I) reach out to that business and they say that they're no longer accepting the Groupon," she said.

By that point, the holidays were over and Gorham asked Groupon for her money back.

"They just said it wasn't possible.

I spoke to a supervisor. (The) supervisor said, 'I'm sorry, there's just nothing we can do for you, literally, nothing our system can do for you.' And that's when I reached out to (Action 9)," she said.

Groupon didn't explain the confusion, but apologized and gave Gorham a full refund of $172, plus an extra $20 for her trouble.

"Oh, my gosh, I called my mom right afterwards. I was so excited," Gorham said.

Consumers should check with a business ahead of time to see if it accepts Groupon.
