Alcohol Meeting Discusses Broader Ethics Policy

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — North Carolina's statewide alcohol board has ended an exception that allowed liquor companies to buy meals for public employees at conferences.

The state Alcohol Beverage Control Commission on Wednesday told liquor brokers and distillers that in the future, buying meals could be prosecuted under state or federal laws.

Possible conflicts of interest have gained attention after one liquor company treated the Mecklenburg County ABC Board's employees to a dinner that cost $12,700 and another paid for a lunch costing nearly $300.

State ABC Commission Chairman Jon Williams spoke out against a culture of entitlement among local liquor boards, which are public bodies.

The Wilmington-area ABC board administrator announced his retirement after revelations he and his son together collected $400,000.
