Fans react to potential Bobcats name change

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For fans of the teal and purple, it's a throwback to another era, a nostalgic history littered with names like Bogues, Johnson and Mourning.

"I just loved them. I still have a shirt from them from the 90s in my closet,” said Charlotte Hornets fan Susan Denton.

Outside Bobcats Arena, NBA fans didn't shy away saying how they feel about a changing the Charlotte Bobcats name back to the Hornets.

"What goes through my head? A championship for Charlotte,” said fan Randy White.

From hats, to jerseys, even tattoos, there’s no question to what team name one Charlotte trio wants.

They've even started their movement, Bring Back The Buzz and We Bee-Lieve Charlotte, a Facebook page more than 20,000 strong.

"It is a part of it. It's about engaging the community and getting this fan base intertwined with this team in a way we know they can be,” said John Morgan.

"The name Hornets represents a time the NBA was successful here in this city,” said Scotty Kent.

CBS Sports reports the team filed paperwork last night and even started the process of registering a website under the Hornets name.

Eyewitness News reached out to the Bobcats about the potential change, but they haven't responded.

"They had history here,” said fan Merton Bye.

NBA fans hope the Bobcats franchise looks to the past, so the city of Charlotte can have something to cheer about in the future.
