Action 9: Driver had trouble getting title after paying for car

By Don Griffin

A woman reached out to Action 9, saying a car dealership wouldn't turn over her title after she finished paying for her car.

For three years, Shanicka Blakeney never missed a payment on her 2002 Ford Escort. Then, in March, she paid her last $320 payment to the car lot.

Blakeney said Crown Auto Sales on Ashley Road told her it would give her the title 30 days after her last payment, but didn't.

“I was calling, asking, ‘Should I call the people that have my title?’ They told me no,” Blakeney said.

She said a rep at Crown Auto Sales told her the title was being held by a bank and that the bank was in the process of sending it to them.

But Blakeney said it still didn't arrive.

“I went to her boss,” Blakeney said. “He kept giving me the runaround, and then I told them I was going to notify you.”

Action 9 talked to the owner of Crown Auto Sales, and he claimed his staff told Blakeney there would be a delay because their bank lost her title.

He said they immediately filed an application for a new title with NCDMV, which requires a 15-day waiting period.

Blakeney said she would have been more understanding if someone at Crown had explained that to her, like they did with Action 9.

Crown then gave Blakeney her new title.

“(I will) keep it in a safe place,” she said.
