Action 9: Homeowner unhappy with contractor choice

By Don Griffin

A man said he trusted the wrong person to do some renovations in his kitchen.

Phillip Annas still doesn't have new kitchen countertops, months after he hired a Hickory contractor named Handyman.

Annas paid $2,100 upfront and said he was surprised later, when the contractor told him he couldn't get the materials.

If Annas had checked with the BBB, he would have found the contractor, Chris Robinson, has 36 complaints and an F rating.

Robinson changed his business name from Home Tek Handyman after the BBB put him on its “dirty dozen” list of the worst businesses.

“Up until 2011, he had a solid record with us, then all of a sudden complaints started to mount (and he) started to ignore the complaints,” said BBB president Tom Bartholomy.

That could explain why Annas said Robinson hasn't returned his calls weeks after promising to give back his $2,100.

“I just feel like they're ignoring me and they're not responding properly,” Annas said.

Action 9 went to Robinson's office, but he wasn't in.

But on the phone, he said he would mail Annas a $2,100 check and then kept his promise.
