Chris Shipman of Greenville, S.C., was in Charlotte for his daughter's basketball tournament and said he was shocked to have his credit card charged $750 for a broken hotel TV.

“It’s just outrageous,” he said. “The charges are just outrageous.

Shipman said Holiday Inn Express on Arrowood Road claimed he broke his room TV some time before he checked out on Sunday, March 11.

“When my wife and I left the room at 7 a.m., the TV was fine,” Shipman said.

He thinks it was an inside job by hotel housekeeping or maintenance.

“There's more to this story than meets the eye,” Shipman said.

Shipman is disputing the charge with his card issuer, but Holiday Inn Express wasn't budging.

Shipman and Action 9’s Don Griffin paid the hotel a visit.

Manager K.C. Link-Page agreed to talk to Action 9 and had her maintenance supervisor show Action 9 the TV, which had a broken base.

“When you left the room and we go in to clean it, the television is broken,” the manager said. “I'm not sure from my position (what) you're expecting me to do.”

“Well, I ask you to really look in-house, thoroughly,” Shipman said.

But the manager stood by her staff. That's when Action 9 appealed, asking whether the owner would consider writing off the TV as a token of goodwill.

“I will go to him and see if there is something we can do to resolve this,” she said.

Action 9 left with the owner agreeing to lift the $750 charge.

Shipman is happy, but has a message for others staying in hotels.

“Take pictures. (Do) something to help defend yourself if something like this were to happen to you,” he said.
