Action 9: Man says he’s had many problems with moped

By Don Griffin

Squeaking brakes is just one of the many problems James Pemperton said he's had with his 7-week-old moped.

He paid nearly $1,400 for the moped at Lesslie Powersports in Rock Hill. But he said it was back in the shop eight times in the first month to have things like the horn fixed and to have his front end checked.

“I feel unsafe riding the bike,” Pemperton said. “The front end is jumping and the tires is squeaking.”

When his battery kept dying, the shop gave him a charger. But Pemperton said it’s inconvenient to have to take the moped inside to plug in the charger.

“I didn't buy an electric bike,” he said.

Pemperton now wants his money back, but the shop refused.

The owner said there is nothing wrong with the bike and blamed Pemperton for not doing required maintenance.

Action 9 called Peace Sports, the moped's manufacturer.

A spokesperson said although Pemperton’s 30-day parts warranty had expired, they'd make an exception and supply parts for any repairs on his bike, but didn't say for how long.

Pemperton now tells others considering a moped to check the brand's reliability and warranty before buying.
