Action 9: Man says hospital charged him for wrong procedure

By Don Griffin

A man said he had surgery on his ankle, but a Lancaster hospital charged him for the wrong procedure.

Lewis Still had ankle surgery last July. He said he’s recovered fully from surgery but not the mistake made by the hospital.

“They charged me for a wrist surgery, instead of my ankle,” Still said.

He said the coding error by Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster resulted in $3,000 in overcharges.

“The thing was, I had it right here highlighted for them that they had made the mistake,” Still said.

But he said even after he showed them the mistake, Springs Memorial did nothing, telling him it had already gone to collections.

“They kind of pushed it to the side. 'Mr. Still, calm down,' you know. 'We can't do nothing about it right now,'” Still said.

Still had no choice but to start making $150 monthly payments on the $3,000 bill.

Action 9 got in touch with Springs Memorial. A spokesperson would only say they had spoken to Still and resolved the matter to his satisfaction.

Still then told Action 9 the hospital zeroed the balance and reimbursed him $1,200 for overpayments.

“Y’all stepped in and the next thing I know, it was solved,” Still said.

Still now advises everyone to examine their medical bills for mistakes and to be persistent in getting them corrected.
